Fall in unemployment is encouraging but challenges remain, says Sussex Enterprise

  • In the last three months unemployment figures in Sussex have fallen with just over 1,500 fewer people claiming Job Seekers Allowance.
  • Unemployment in the last month in Sussex has fallen by just over 1,150 fewer people claiming JSA.

Commenting on the unemployment figures published today by the ONS, Wendy Bell, General Manager at Sussex Enterprise said:

“It is encouraging that we are seeing a fall in unemployment in Sussex over recent months. However, nationally earnings are growing at a rate far below inflation and disposable incomes are being squeezed.  It is important that the MPC takes no action that will add further to inflation.

"There is pressure on the government to implement a bold and effective growth strategy that will enable businesses to expand and to drive economic recovery. Sussex businesses have the hunger and determination to do this, but need more support so they are able to achieve their full potential. It is crucial that the government develops a stronger growth strategy, focusing on areas such as infrastructure, that will enable businesses to create jobs."
