Case Studies determine the return on energy efficiency investment

Energy efficiency measures aren't just about protecting the environment - they're also genuine money savers. A case study comparison shows how quickly different schemes pay for themselves.

The Sustainable Business Network has put together some data on a number of energy saving projects in Sussex to determine how quickly businesses can expect a return on their investment. The table below demonstrates that switching to LED lighting can return a profit very quickly, especially at a large business with a lot of lights.

Of course, actual savings will vary based on a number of factors related to each individual business, and may also depend on what other energy efficiency schemes are in place. The nursery school installed double glazing and roof installation alongside their boiler upgrade, reducing the need for heating and therefore reducing the energy savings from the boiler. There are also benefits beyond energy saving that haven’t been taken into account, such as the fact that a new boiler may have lower maintenance costs than the old one.

Energy Saving

Cost Saving

Payback Period

Large retailer

Another factor to remember is that businesses don’t have to bear the costs of energy efficiency upgrades alone, thanks to grant schemes for sustainability. Low Carbon Workspaces offers match-funded grants up to £5,000 to SMEs in the South East to help pay for installation costs, meaning the business’ own investment is reduced and can be recovered all the quicker.
