University of Brighton withdraws campus plan for Horsham

The University of Brighton has had to withdraw plans to open a Horsham campus on the Novartis site in Wimblehurst Road.

The plans, announced in January, would have seen 3,500 students occupying the high quality Novartis laboratories, and promised 2,250 new jobs and £1.7 billion in investment. However, the plans relied on funding to support the development through the Regional Growth Fund, and in spite of support from Horsham District Council, local businesses, and the Horsham-based Coast to Capital Local Economic Partnership, the application was rejected by the government.

Following this unsuccessful application, the university has looked at alternative ways of delivering the plans, without success. The university has stressed the support they received from local partners, and particularly Horsham District Council, but has now regretfully withdrawn from any further negotiations.

Professor Julian Crampton, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “The university and many people living, working and wanting to study for higher education qualifications in the Horsham area, are profoundly disappointed with this outcome.”

Horsham District Council will continue to work closely with Novartis about the future of the site.
