GCSE attainment amongst 15 year old boys and girls in the District is higher than the regional average. In 2008/09 72% of boys and 82% of girls living in Horsham achieved five A*-C grades at GCSE or equivalent. This compares with 66% and 74% respectively in the South East region as a whole.

Changes to Healthy Workplace Awards Help Small Businesses

HORSHAM District Council wants to encourage local businesses of all sizes to promote healthier choices for their staff.

The Healthy Workplace Awards, launched by Horsham District Council in 2009, are designed to recognise the efforts employers make to improve the health of staff in the workplace.

Following the success of the current awards, criteria more suited to smaller and medium sized firms has now been included to give smaller businesses a chance to match the larger employers in the Horsham District.

Employers involved in the scheme are provided with assistance to help them achieve a Healthy Workplace Award.

Studies have shown that employees who are healthier are more productive and less likely to be absent through ill health.

The scheme is flexible and can be focussed on the needs of the employees ranging from physical activity and healthy eating to dental care and sexual health.

Wellbeing affects all employees, regardless of their contract type, working hours or job description.

The Horsham Healthy Workplace Award is a statement of intent for a business to show good practice and commitment to the health of its workforce.

Businesses applying for the award are required to make a commitment in the following areas:

  • developing management practices and policies that support health
  • providing opportunities and activities to promote health and wellbeing
  • providing a workplace that protects the safety and health of employees and promotes a positive working environment

To celebrate the start of the new award, representatives from local businesses that have achieved an award were recently handed certificates from Cllr Sue Rogers, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for a Safer and Healthier District, in a ceremony held at Mannings Heath Hotel in Horsham in early August.

The following local employers have already embraced the project by making good use of free resources available, such as staff health checks, stop smoking and dietary advice:

  • Little Monkeys Day Nursery
  • Envitia Ltd
  • The Southdown Gun Club
  • Mannings Heath Hotel
  • Anne Frank Montessori
  • Austens & Co
  • Birchwood Ford Kia Group
  • AToM

Cllr Sue Rogers said:

“I am delighted to present the certificates to the local businesses.

“Local employers have an important role to play in creating healthy environments and supporting their employees to make healthier choices. A healthy workplace is better for staff and better for business.

“I would urge all employers to investigate how they can make their workplace healthier and achieve a healthy workplace award.”
